How I Harvest Hickory Nuts

hickory tree

This is how you harvest hickory nuts. You have to a hickory nut tree. The bark is jaggedy and there are many lobed leaves on each branch.

This is how you know the nuts are ripe: it has to be brown and also green. When it’s hickory nut season you let them fall down and pick them up off the ground.

Lil using bench vice

You have to have a vice to crack them. It’s hard to crack the shell open. Squirrels crack the shells open with their teeth.

After the squirrels drop the nuts, they can hit the roof of the garage or the ground. It gets the ground kind of messy so watch out for that.

The meat is ripe when it is light brown. It tastes kind of like pecans. I usually eat them raw.

I like doing hickory nuts because the inside is yummy.

My Terrarium

child tending terrariums

What I like about my terrariums are that I can make more homes for other animals and I have fun making terrariums.

This is how I make them: first, I put some dirt in a plastic container. Then I put the moss in on top and if I can I’ll find some rocks and wood to put in because pill bugs like rotten wood, I think. I find the moss in the alley. There’s moss growing near the big church.

My two terrariums have three different kinds of bugs. One of the terrariums only has pill bugs and centipedes. The other has some centipedes, pillbugs, and one caterpillar.

I take care of my caterpillar. I put a cotton ball soaked in sugar water so the caterpillar can drink the sugar water. And I’m seeing how the mustard greens are doing with the caterpillar, if the caterpillar likes the mustard greens.

Every week or every day I water the terrariums. Sometimes if I put too much water in, I realize that it might sink the bugs or drown them so I take all the bugs out of the terrarium.

I think that all of the kids should be able to make terrariums. Just follow my instructions and that might teach you how to make your own terrarium.

Lil Tells About Her Square Foot Garden

The Squirrel Parts

squirrel parts illustrationHow we saw the inside of the squirrel is that Papa hunted a squirrel. We took apart the body. I was grossed out a little. I touched it with gloves. It had humungous teeth. We were also surprised in it because it had a lot of fat in it. It had fat all around the kidneys.

And Papa cut open the liver and the heart and the stomach. It had stored seeds in its belly for the winter I think.

We kept the meat to eat.

I wrote this picture because I was just really interested in the squirrel.

The Pupa

Me and Kaitlyn met at the nature center at East Harbor State Park. We watched a monarch caterpillar that was J-shaped at the top of a cage. First we waited a long time.

Then it started peeling its skin off. The skin came off from a crack in its head. It wiggled and waggled. Underneath the skin was a pupa. It was green and as long as a worm but fatter.  The caterpillar skin shrinked up and then it fell off. The pupa was fully made.

Later that evening we saw its chrysalis.

I really like the nature center. I learned that when dragonflies are made, the larva eats baby mosquitoes. They shed their skin and then they come out as a grown up dragonfly.

How I Homeschool

We found a crawfish when we were hiking. It just molted.

Homeschooling means that you have school at home. Your mom teaches you different things with math books. I learn by sounding out and looking at the pictures. Now I’m just really good at reading.

Go to a museum called the Historical Society because you can see lots of bones about different things that lived in the past. I just like going to museums to see all over the world what it was like in the past.

Sometimes I watch nature shows that teach me about the world. I go outside and make discoveries. I like taking hikes, it’s also a good use of energy.

I just like homeschooling a lot.

Lil at The Wilds

I went to the Wilds yesterday. I went with Gram and Tompa and Mom and Dad because I like to see all the African animals.

rhino at wilds

In Africa, they killed the rhinoceroses to get their horns. These rhinoceroses are in captivity.

This is me. I’m the author of this blog.

camel

These Bactrian camels are shedding their fur because it is spring now.

donkey

One of the Persian Onagers are pregnant.

The numbers of the onagers help keep track of them and help keep track of how old they are.

barn swallow nest

The barn swallow right here was having its babies. It’s an American species.

giraffe

This giraffe came from Africa. You can tell them apart from female and male because the males are usually a little darker. They can run really fast.

Now, if you ever go to the Wilds, be sure to be safe and stay in the truck. And you can take pictures of the animals too. It was a great trip and it was great talking with you guys, so bye!

PS. I took these pictures myself except for the rhino, the giraffe, and the one of me. Mama took those.

Building a Wren House

Book Report: Chicken Feathers by Joy Cowley

It’s about a chicken that only talks to a boy that’s her owner. Their names are Semolina and Josh.

The fox bit her and took her away, but she pecked the fox in the paw. And he hustled off bleeding.

Josh’s mother has a baby at the very end. And Semolina was drinking brew and she spoke.

I thought that it was great because it’s very silly. And she says “shut your beak!”

Little House on the Prairie

Little House on the Prairie is great. So there’s this family and they wanted to move to a different country in Indian land. They moved there and one day on the newspaper report it said that the army is coming to take away the white people to a different country. There were war cries. Mary had a red dress and Laura had a blue dress. Mary and Laura ate their corn cakes for lunch. There’s their mom and their dad and they ride in a wagon and they build a house and they make a bed and they make a rocking chair for Baby Carrie.

I think other kids should read it because it’s great.
